I read through everything but it all kind of confused me a little. Never realize how much junk you have on your computer till you have to go back and re-install it. As for expensive RAM, it probably was expensive at first. It's not expired, just unsupported.

I think Install XP on D, open your BIOS (press F2, Esc, whatever it says to "enter bios" or "enter configuration") and set it as the default boot drive. the model is hp pavilion dv 9740us.

The program has a wizard that will help you set up a virtual machine for the OS of your choice. You can probably get 1GB for the same price you paid. My guess is that BOOT.INI is on the C: drive. When you install two os on separate drives, one drive must be the master and contain the boot.ini file that list both operating systems.
