Most desktop PCs do NOT come with wireless connectivity. I am using a Lynksys WRT54G router for over a year and this problem has never occurred. One is getting disconnected for no apparent reason, the other not reconnecting automatically. If it stays lit, move on to the lan port (or whatever the port is labelled on your modem where the ethernet cable plugs in to connect your netgear). I remember, it sometimes can change the dns to 0.0.0.0 (at least on win 7). If your laptop wireless is turned off, it won't matter what you do, you will not get connected. With that said, the apparent randomness of networking problems with some Macs running OS X Yosemite could suggest compatibility issues with particular routers, issues with some wireless networks, or issues related many mouths later i started haveing problems whit the internett conection just like the first time i installed 8.1.
And if that were the case, you likely wouldn't be here asking these questions.
