Learning Management Systems (LMS). Just a digital repository?

Distance education is communication-assisted education ( e-mail ,  radio ,  television ,  videotapes ,  computers ,  teleconferencing , etc.  ) with little or no interpersonal or classroom contact between instructor and learner. This term is also used by  UNESCO , while since  1999 it has been  added with the exact same interpretation to the Mesh (Medical Subject Headings) dictionary of terms of the National Library of Medicine of the  United States of America.

E-Learning

Today, distance education is implemented almost exclusively with the support of the computer in an online environment. For this reason LMS systems vary greatly from systems for managing education and training to applications for delivering online (blended/hybrid) college and university courses, it tends to be synonymous with the concepts of  electronic learning  ( e-learning ), computer assisted learning (computer assisted learning)

Online Learning

( online learning ),  online education  (online education), internet-based education ( web-based education). The difference in the meaning of these terms begins to degrade and the separation becomes more and more difficult for both beginners and experts lms-systems. The means that have been used and are being used in distance education are the following:

Learning Management System (L.M.S.)

The e-learning platform  is a knowledge management system in which teachers post their teaching materials and organize their lessons. The students participate creatively in their assignments, are evaluated for them and are informed. It is the online “space” of secure access for those involved in the educational process, from any point and computer device . It provides opportunities for students to communicate , both with each other and with their teachers, in an organized digital educational environment . Based  on the constructivist theory of learning, orients the energy of Mantinean in four main axes. The student’s active attitude towards the educational material, self-teaching and learning autonomy .

The development of critical thinking .

The development of cooperation and flexibility in undertaking various roles within a research group .The classroom turns into a laboratory and the student acquires more and more abilities to interpret and represent the world. The knowledge acquired in this way is not sterile information, but full of meaning and experience, with the result that the environment step by step becomes more and more familiar, more familiar. This is the first innovative dimensionof LMS use: the epistemological differentiation in knowledge representation, which is traditionally limited to the written textual form of school textbooks.

The teacher, as guarantor of the adequacy of educational resources, takes care of the multiple renewal of this representation by rearranging the material and enriching it with different languages LMS-systems. The students, for their part, intervene in the educational material and, creating new content, appropriate it, gradually building their own image of the world, their personal worldview.

The second innovation is institutional :

By design, an LMS forces users to assume roles within the course. Each user assumes a role in the courses or modules they are registered for. The roles – and with them the privileges that accompany them – alternate to the extent that the student-user creating content is upgraded within the framework of the system. If the lms-systems successfully enters the classroom, the virtual assumption of different roles is accompanied by a corresponding role reversal in reality.
