Well, running in safe mode had the fan running (incorrectly) at full speed (as it did before the BIOS update), but with an (apparently) stable network connection. I went through two different 'cheaper' modems and still had the same problem. I ended up accessing my Sky Broadband router and changed the channel from 'Auto' to '6' (as a random guess!) and it seems to be working okay now.
